As the 2012 session of A.S.E. begins, please remember to do the following:
*On their scheduled A.S.E. day(s), remind your children which class(es) they are attending (especially during the first week). This helps alleviate confusion and nervousness during dismissal.
*Send your children in attire appropriate for their A.S.E. class(es) (for example, sneakers and comfortable clothes for sports classes, clothes that can get messy for art classes).
*If your children require items for their classes, please send them with your children or drop them off during the day (these include baseball gloves, tennis racquets and guitars).
*If, for any reason, your children will NOT be attending A.S.E. on their scheduled day(s), please send a note into school with them to indicate this.
INFORMATION ABOUT INCLEMENT WEATHER/SCHOOL CLOSINGS:
In the event that there is an EARLY DISMISSAL from Grafflin, all A.S.E. classes are canceled and children are sent home immediately.
If the District cancels after school activities, A.S.E. classes are included and children will be dismissed as they would be otherwise on that day. Cancellation of after school activities is communicated through eblast(s) and a phone call from the A.S.E. Committee.
An extra week is reserved at the end of the session to provide one make-up in the event of cancellation(s).
If you have any questions, please contact the A.S.E. Committee atgrafflinase@live.com.

PTA Fundraising
Membership dues alone do not cover the costs of all Chappaqua PTA activities. For that reason we run a fundraising program. You can support the Chappaqua PTA in one of three ways: by ordering a KidStuff coupon book, by purchasing theater tickets through Givenik or by ordering Sally Foster products.
Are you a Sally Foster gift wrap fan? No worries, we have continued our relationship with the Sally Foster company for another year, but only via direct online ordering. To order, please visit www.sallyfoster.com. On the home page, before selecting items, purchasers should click on "Support a Fundraiser" in the upper right-hand corner, click on "Give credit to school or group" and enter the Chappaqua PTA's account number, 181309. Your items will be shipped directly to the address you provide. Shipping is free on orders of $50 or more and the PTA will receive 40% of every purchase.
NEW THIS YEAR is the Chappaqua PTA's fundraising arrangement with Givenik.com. Givenik is an exciting new way to get discount tickets, premium seats and group rates to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows and support the Chappaqua PTA! The PTA will receive 5% of your ticket purchase, so when you're thinking about getting show tickets, please keep Givenik in mind. Click here to visit the PTA's dedicated page on the Givenik website.

Recycling Drive for January: Holiday Cards
Save your holiday, birthday and thank you cards! The Grafflin Environmental Committee will be collecting all types of cards for the St. Jude's Ranch for Children Recycled Card Program. The children participate in making the new cards by removing the front and attaching a new back with a new message. The result is a beautiful new card made by the children and volunteers. The benefits are two fold: customers receive "green" holiday cards for use and the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and importance of "going green". NOTE: Please send only card fronts (rip off message side of card) Also, we cannot accept cards with photos of people on them.
Illustrations and generic photos are fine. This drive will run until the beginning of February.
Thanks to all who ordered their Lunchskins! You are doing your part to reduce the use of plastic bags in lunches and snacks. The drive was a huge success!!
GRAFFLIN GREEN STATION
Come visit Grafflin's Green Station located in the front lobby. We will be posting useful environmental information and tips throughout the year for students and parents.
The Green Station is also the place to drop off your contributions to our recycle drives.
RECYCLE DRIVES
BOTTLE CAPS: We will, once again, be accepting bottle caps this year as we continue to participate in the Aveda Bottlecap Recycling Program. All bottle caps will be recycled into new shampoo bottles and other packaging for Aveda. We can accept RIGID PLASTIC CAPS ONLY. This includes caps on shampoo, water, milk and other beverage bottles, pharmaceutical lids, flip top caps (like from ketchup or mayo), laundry detergent and peanut butter lids. We CANNOT accept non-rigid caps such as yogurt lids and butter tub lids. This program keeps many of these caps from ending up as litter and migrating into our rivers and oceans where they can cause pollution problems and endanger the lives of wildlife.
COSMETIC CONTAINERS!: This year, we will be participating in the Origins Cosmetic Packaging Drive. All cosmetic packaging collected will be sent to Origins, the cosmetic company, where it will be either recycled into new packaging or plastic lumber, or, if it is not recyclable, used for energy recovery, which means it will be incinerated to generate energy. We can accept EMPTY make-up and skin care containers- including cosmetic tubes, bottles and jars- regardless of brand. Cosmetic packaging is often made from resin, which is not usually accepted through local recycling. By contributing to the Origins program, we are helping to keep this packaging out of our landfills.
Shoe Drive: We are accepting shoes and sneakers from both adults and children. We will be donating as much as we can locally to the Community Center of Northern Westchester and TO Neighbor's Link- where any gently worn footwear will go to the in-need communities they serve. We will also be donating some out of season footwear to Soles4Souls- to be distributed to people in need around the world. Those that cannot be reused will be recycled.
********Winter Wear********
A Message About Winter Wear
Dear Parents,
It is Grafflin's philosophy that outdoor recess is an important part of a child's school day. It is an opportunity to enjoy physical activity, as well as being an invaluable tool in the development of socialization skills. Our rule of thumb is that children go outside if the temperature is above 20 degrees (including the wind-chill factor). We would like to ask for your help in making outdoor recess a safe and comfortable experience.
At this time please spend a few minutes speaking to your child about appropriate playground behavior. The throwing of snowballs is a favorite for children but it can be very dangerous. Please remind your children that this activity is not allowed at school.
Also, in the winter months, it is extremely important that parents pay special attention to the outer clothing worn to school by their children. It is essential that each child have a winter jacket, a hat, and gloves or mittens. When snow is on the ground, boots and snow pants are mandatory for outdoor play. Please refer to the following article entitled Winter Wear. This will provide you with additional hints on ways to keep your child well protected from the cold temperatures.
With your cooperation, the children will thoroughly enjoy the beautiful outdoors and the camaraderie of good friends. Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Carol Losey, School Nurse
Debbie Alspach, Assistant Principal

Extra, Extra, Extra . . . Save Those BOX TOPS!
Have you noticed? There is now a Box Top Collection Box in the front entrance of Grafflin. Our collection drive is officially on its way! The collection box may be empty now, but the PTA is hoping that within the next 2 months it gets filled to the top with box tops. We will be collecting box tops through Friday, February 17th. Simply clip out at home and send in with your child to drop off in the collection box. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact either Jocelyn Herman or Joan Schildkraut. What are you waiting for? Get clipping!
Message From the Administration
Re: Morning Drop-off
We have observed a few instances when students dropped off at school in the morning have exited the car on the driveway/traffic side. Of course, this is a very dangerous practice. To refresh your memory regarding morning drop off, we have reprinted the drop-off procedure from page 16 in the Grafflin Student Handbook:
Procedure for an efficient and safe drop off:
- Pull up to the curb at the drop off area. (In front of school)
- STUDENTS SHOULD EXIT THE CAR ON THE CURB SIDE ONLY.
- Parents should not exit the car. (If you must do so, please park in the visitor's lot and walk to school using the sidewalk.)
Allowing children to exit the car on the driveway side is a very dangerous practice and one we strongly discourage. Curb side exiting from the car is a practice established to ensure the safety of our students who are dropped off at school in the morning.

Report Cards Will Not Be Mailed Home This Year*
So Sign Up for Access to Infinite Campus
This year, the elementary report cards will be available online through Infinite Campus, the District's student information management program. The first report card will be available on the parent portal by the end of the school day on February 17th. If you do not already have access to Infinite Campus, please sign up for a portal account as soon as possible in order to avoid any delay in viewing your child's report card. The sign-up process can take up to two weeks. The first step in the process is to fill out and submit an Infinite Campus Portal Agreement to the District's Business Office. Click HERE for a link to the form. You will then be sent an Activation Key by US mail which you will use to create your Portal Account. Please be aware that an account cannot immediately be created to give you portal access. The Infinite Campus Portal Agreement form must be submitted and then reviewed by the District.
There is no need to sign up again if you already have an account for an older child. Each family needs only one account to view information on all family members in the district.
*Hard copies of the report card will be printed and sent home only by request. Please let the school office know if you wish to receive a paper copy of your child's report card.
Parent-to-Parent Networking Session for Parents of Current Special Ed/504 4th Grade Students Re: Transitioning into Middle School Thursday, February 16th, at 9:30am, Seven Bridges Lower Commons
Attention current 4th Grade parents of students with IEPs or 504 Plans (parents of children in lower grades are also welcome to attend): The Chappaqua PTA Special Education Committee is hosting a parent-to-parent networking session for parents of current Special Ed and 504 Plan 4th grade students in anticipation of upcoming CSE meetings and the transition to middle school that your child will soon be encountering.
We have invited parents of current Middle School students with IEPs or 504s to act as Subject Matter Experts. Possible topics include everything from riding the bus and managing lockers to how to best handle your child's CSE meeting. We would like to start assembling a list of questions, so think of everything that you would like to know and email your questions to the Co-Chairs of the Special Education Committee of the Chappaqua PTA, Karen Bazik (cafekaren@gmail.com) or Nancy Davidson (nano66@optonline.net).
Attention Special Ed/504 Parents: Middle School Schedule Reconfiguration Meetings
A note from Dr. Heidi McCarthy, Director of Special Education:
On February 7, 2012, informational meetings will be held for parents whose children will be receiving special education services at Robert E. Bell or Seven Bridges Middle Schools during the 2012-2013 school year. While your children will continue to receive the appropriate services to meet their individual needs, we are offering this opportunity for parents to meet with administrators in order to ask questions they may have regarding the schedule and how special education services will be provided. Please plan to join us on February 7th at either session: 9:30 a.m. at Seven Bridges Middle School Lower Commons or 7:00 p.m. at Robert E. Bell Middle School Cafeteria. We hope to see you there. These meetings are open to parents of 4th Graders who will be entering Middle School next Fall, as well as parents of 5th through 7th Graders. These meetings will focus on the schedule reconfiguration, as opposed to the Feb. 16th meeting, which will focus on transisitoning into Middle School for parents of 4th Graders (or parents of younger students looking ahead).
